I was telling my friend that I came across another girl I really don't like and that it was likely to be mutual.
Then she really surprised me by telling: 'I really don't see how someone could dislike you'
It was so sudden and genuine, it left me speechless in a good way :)

Challah

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Today in my baking class I made Challah, which is a traditional Jewish braided bread. I dont think it's perfect according to tradition, as I've never had the bread before today, but my professor seemed to think it was pretty accurate. (You guys let me know if it's okay XD!) I wanted to show you guys, because if i can do this ANYONE can rofl.

Full-Fat Plain Yogurt

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Okay, I thought I'd throw this out there since you guys are so clever at coming up with creative ways to use things up...

I usually buy non-fat plain yogurt for my breakfast, and yesterday I accidentally picked up a HUGE container (maybe 32oz) of the full-fat, cream-top stuff. Not that it's not creamy and wonderful, but it's a little too much for my daily breakfast. However, I'd hate to waste it...

Any idea of something fun I could do with it? I am a good baker, and experienced cook, so anything would work, really...

pumpkin cheesecake

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I am thinking about making a pumpkin cheesecake using crushed ginger snaps instead of graham crackers as the crust. Have you ever done this before? It sounds like it would be a good pairing, but I don't know if the crunchiness of the cookies will make the crust too hard.

Thanks!

What leadership looks like

Obama's new emergency economic plan:

The plan would extend a temporary tax credit of 3,000 dollars for each new job created in the United States by firms over the next two years.

It would permit families to withdraw up to 10,000 dollars from their retirement accounts penalty-free(!), and create a new lending facility for states and localities to have access to funds beyond the frozen credit markets.

And it would impose a 90-day moratorium on the threat of foreclosure for homeowners who are trying "in good faith" to keep up with repayments to a lender benefiting from the Wall Street bailout passed by Congress.

Now, go ask McCain about his plan. Go ahead. I'll wait.

And I looked over at her, listening to her talk about meeting all my friends.
Her: They kept saying, "Oh, you're Raven's girlfriend". You talk about me a lot huh?
Me: Heh well, can you blame me? - beat- You're my girlfriend?
She reached over and put her hand over mine where it rested on the gear shift and squeezed it.
Her: I suppose so.

My best friend was having a fight with her mother last week. They were both complaining about how the other "can't keep their shit together". Then randomly my friend says this:

"Thank God for Melanie being around. At least SHE'S mature enough to keep her shit together!"

I was surprised when her Mom told me that, because lately I've been feeling that my life is headed towards a downward spiral. But nonetheless, it made me feel special.

Has anyone else wondered...

Why Sarah Palin's kid aren't in school? It just find it odd that she's got an eight-year-old, a fifteen-year-old, and a six-month old baby on the campaign trail with her. I definitely don't see Barack toting Sasha and Malia everywhere.

A little Angela Davis, anyone?

Pumpkin issues

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 6:06 PM
I've got a hankerin' for some pumpkin soup, which normally would be no problem around this time of year. However, I am currently in Berlin, rather than my native Minnesota, and the almighty pumpkin doesn't seem to get quite as much fall-time adoration here. So, although I've found a very tasty-looking recipe for homemade pumpkin soup, I can't seem to locate a sugar pumpkin. It could be that I just don't know where to look. However, I have seen a lot of "Hokkaidokürbis". I'm completely clueless when it comes to squashes, but comparing the scientific name (Curcurbita maxima) with the list on the English wikipedia page, I think this is a hubbard squash or a buttercup squash (are those just two different names for same plant?). I've never had that before, but can I substitute it for the pumpkin and get pretty much the same taste? Would I need to make any adjustments to the recipe?

Beyond that key problem, I'm a little confused on how I'm supposed to "peel" a pumpkin. Any tricks? Up until now, the only way I've ever cooked raw pumpkin was to cut off the top, remove the seeds, and stick it in the oven until it was mushy and I could just scoop it out with a spoon for use in pumpkin pie. I'm guessing that's not what it expected for this recipe. It also calls for the pumpkin to be cubed, but approximately how big should I make the cubes? (sorry for the very specific questions, but I'm rather useless in the kitchen unless I have very exact directions!)

Miss Jessies Products

Have any of you tried these products? In particular the Curly Pudding or Meringue?

Thanks!

ps. I'm sure there is a post on these somewhere, but after going back about 100 entries I wasn't able to find it.

Awhile ago (I think it was on here) I saw an idea for a gift where you measure out the ingredients for a recipe in a jar and give it to people. Anyone know what I mean?

What should I do with 4 large zucchini and 2 bunches of cilantro? Would it make a good salad or a gross salad? What if I turned it into a frittata?

Also, what's in your favorite bean salad?

I went crazy cooking yesterday but forgot to integrate the zucchini into the veg. "chili" I was making. I got cilantro because I like it and will put it into some guacamole, but it's a shame to waste the rest of the bunches.

Rock of Love Charm School

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Now, I know some of y'all watched this last night.
Thoughts?

I'm still trying to figure out Raven. I don't even remember her from the shows!

And it seems like Daisy (overly collegened-crying ass-weird looking relative of Oscar De La Hoya) is going to have her own show on VH1 called "Daisy of Love".

Now, it's getting ridiculous.

Baked Chicken

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 10:02 AM
I am looking to learn how to make chicken that doesn't use Shake and Bake, because I am trying to eat healthier. My big problem is that I don't know how to make anything besides S&B.

How would I bake boneless chicken, without it being bland. What else would you put in the pan?

Sorry I'm such a cooking n00b. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd like to make stuffed shells this week. Any favorite recipes? Also, any advice for freezing the leftovers?

i'm changing schools next year, and a guy i know was talking to me about me leaving and our last term of school together.

i asked him if he really was going to miss me, even though we'd still talk online all the time we could and he said this:
i won't see you walking to school every morning, and i won't have the feeling of being nervous when your around, and it might be different with you at another school. But you'll meet new and better people. If your gone forever, then fuck yes, I will miss you.
If you cry then I'll cry.

(edited out all the stupid teen speak language he does, but god, he makes my heart feel funny and light and fills my stomach with butterflies; i'll miss seeing his face everyday and knowing that he cares about me, even though we messed up our chances a long, long time ago.)
